The Common Source Database (CSDB)

The How of S1000D

Clearly, this type of automation requires not only careful planning and prescribed processes, but also the right technology to be effective. Fortunately, S1000D also prescribes the functionality such technology must provide.

This is not to imply that all CSDBs are the same! But all CSDBs, by definition, have the ability to import, manage, and export valid S1000D XML (or SGML for older issues of S1000D) and this is the whole key to interchangeability. In addition, a CSDB should be able to provide some degree of automation for data module creation, data dispatch note creation, referencing, publication module creation, and multi-channel publishing.
